Reflection for TLM 1010

 It's a wrap!

Over the course of weeks being in this class, I have undoubtedly gained a deeper understanding in effective communication and writing skills. It is through the contribution of my classmates’ as well as Professor Brad’s constructive feedbacks which made my learning much more enriching by allowing me to see certain mistakes I may not have known if not for the feedbacks. By which I believe that the various assignments and in-class works have aid my classmates and I to become more effective and proficient in both written and verbal skills.

At the start of this module, I set goals for myself to develop my written and verbal communication skills as well as to be more spontaneous in speaking to new people with an optimistic mindset.
In class, we were actively given opportunities to speak and to work in different groups to accomplish each task, whether it is an assignment or in-class work. I feel that such method of teaching not only gives every student an opportunity to build their confidence but also widen their perspectives from various discussions. In fact, I was able to develop my communication skills and enhance my knowledge in certain areas through group discussions. Apart from that, I felt that the peer presentations were very useful. It has helped me to be more spontaneous in speaking to new people, gradually removing the negative mindset I had, where I was able to see that people do not find me intrusive. In fact, they do listen to me and took my feedback for them constructively. This enabled me to see things and people in a different light, in a good way of course.

Back then, I mentioned that being a business student has allowed me to give presentations professionally and built my confidence in speaking to large crowds. For that, I am incredibly thankful and honoured to be given the opportunity to emcee for the presentation showcase. Despite giving countless presentations and emceeing for various events back when I was in polytechnic, it was still rather inevitable to experience some jitters during the showcase itself as I have not emceed in a while. Thankfully, I had my partner, Kai Wei, with me. Not only did we craft out a rough script together, we also reassured each other during the showcase whenever one of us made a tiny mistake, in hopes that the audience will not notice, and the showcase will continue to run smoothly. Moreover, both Kai Wei and I were able to react to instances wittily which made our partnership much more synergized.

To end this on a good note, I feel that the different class activities and Professor Brad’s method of teaching resonates pretty well with me and has no doubt allowed me to gain a whole spectrum of knowledge, from communication to learning more about myself and even to understanding people better. This module has thus given me a very fruitful experience which I would certainly carry with me into my future endeavours. With that, thank you Professor Brad, for taking me on this learning journey!

  1. Dear Quan,

Thank you for your detailed reflection. In this post you've covered many aspects of the module and highlighted some parts of your experience and learning that you found 'enriching.' You mention examples such as the feedback sessions as well as being called on to work in different teams. I'm glad you appreciated these approaches to teaching and learning.

In addition, you discussed your experience in prepping for an serving as an emcee at the showcase. I'm happy to learn that even for a seasoned presenter like yourself the opportunity was 'synergizing.' It was clear that you and Kai Wei did a highly commendable job in terms of the content and delivery. Thanks once again for sharing your talents!

Overall, you made an excellent effort this term. I enjoyed working with you. All the best as you continue your learning journey!

    Brad
